Let’s dive into the top four must-do activities for anyone looking to truly immerse themselves in this incredible region.
1. Meet the reindeer 🦌
Reindeer are more than just animals in the Arctic; they’re an essential part of the cultural and historical landscape, especially for the Sami people! These beautiful creatures have long been so so so crucial to Sami life, providing transportation, warmth, and companionship.

There are so many stories about reindeer, which I will cover in another post. For now, I am spoiling some fun facts about them:
- Initially, herders traditionally hunted wild reindeer, which was a skill passed down through generations.
- Surprisingly, the newly born reindeer can take their first steps within minutes of being born and even run after a few hours!
- Most of the calves are marked and trademarked for identification.
- Reindeer’s eyes change colour with the seasons. During the winter, when the land is ruled by snow and ice, their eyes appear to be blue, which helps them to see in the darkness of polar nights. In the summer, their eyes turn to a golden hue, which is better suited for the brighter conditions of the Arctic summer.

After the stories, we got to meet the reindeer! They are known for their curious and friendly nature, so I was hoping to get some good photos with them!
At the gate, we were provided with a handful of lichen, which were reindeer’s fav! We got to hand-feed the reindeer and watch them gaze on the food!
Lasso-throwing
In Saariselkä, you even get the chance to try lasso-throwing!
Lasso (or in Finnish suopunki), is a traditional tool used in reindeer herding. It’s a part of local cultural activities, often associated with traditional Finnish or Indigenous Sámi practices.
The activity involves using a looped rope, which is thrown to capture a target, usually a post, a pole, or a specific object. The goal is to throw the lasso in such a way that the loop lands around the target. All you need to do is to catch the “fake reindeer antler” with the lasso in different ranges, from the shortest to the longest distance.

Tips from me:
- Don’t ask a herder how many reindeer they have on their farm. It’s like asking how much money you have in your bank account.
- It is an outdoor activity, so it is best to wear PROPER winter clothes!
Physical exertion level: Low-Intensity
This activity is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels, as it usually doesn’t require strenuous physical effort. Even in cases where reindeer sledging is offered, it’s often a relaxed experience where participants sit on the sledge while the reindeer pulls them at a comfortable pace.
For those looking for an accessible and engaging cultural experience, meeting the reindeer is a perfect choice!

2. Sami culture exploration
The Sami are the indigenous people of the Arctic, with a culture that’s as vibrant and resilient as the landscape they call home. Exploring Sami culture is a highlight of any trip to the Arctic, offering insight into centuries-old traditions, crafts, and beliefs.

Usually, you will be immersed in the Sami culture in the Reindeer herder experience. This is the time you can meet a local Sami indigenous person, who will be telling you so many stories about their culture. It’s a good time to ask lots of questions!
You might also get to listen to “joik” singing, a hauntingly beautiful form of music unique to the Sami.
If you are interested, check if there’s a cultural festival happening during your visit! Sami festivals are filled with music, colourful clothing, and special foods, making them the perfect opportunity to experience Sami culture at its most lively and authentic.
Storytelling by the fire in Swedish Lapland
In some destinations, people organize themselves with a guide for a storytelling night. For me, it was a memorable night on my Grand Lapland trip during our time in Abisko. Even though it was just a self-organized activity, I learned a lot about the cultures through the stories there.
People arrived at the hut, gathered closer to the fire, embraced in warm blankets, and were ready to share the experience. We could almost feel the excitement building as we waited for the story to begin.

Lapland’s stories often feature elements of magic, folklore creatures, and the Northern Lights. In the heart of the Arctic wilderness, our storytellers began to tell old legends and tales of Lapland. The power of words took us to another world, one filled with mystery, adventure, and wonder.
We ended the night with a walk together to Abisko Kungsleden tunnel. It was a special typical tunnel with speakers that played traditional Sami songs, known as “joik”. As we walked towards the end, the gradual transformation of these sounds created an immersive musical journey.
Physical exertion level: Low-Intensity
Similar to the Reindeer herder experience, this activity is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.
3. Arctic Ocean Tour to Norway & Sauna
For those seeking adventure and jaw-dropping views, an Arctic Ocean tour is a can’t-miss experience. The Arctic Ocean tour will depend on the destination you choose to travel to.
For example, if you are travelling to Saariselkä, you will visit a small picturesque village of Bugøynes in Northern Norway. If you are travelling to Kilpisjärvi, then Tromsø will be your stop. For Levi & Ylläs, the scenic village of Skibotn would be a convenient place to pause and explore. If you have already a preferred destination in mind, take some time to research these charming Arctic towns to see which one aligns best with your travel plans and interests.
The Norway destinations could change in each trip depending on the final itinerary, but in general, the common thing about it is to see the stunning scenery of Norway! From early morning until late evening, you will discover new things about Lapland! There’s something so magical about being out on these icy waters, snowy mountains and breathtaking views on the way.
Chance to sauna like a local
This is definitely one activity you must try during your Lapland trip, no matter what kind of traveller you are! It’s the perfect way to relax, rejuvenate, and recover after high-energy adventures, and it lets you completely immerse yourself in Lapland’s stunning nature. You’ll feel refreshed, recharged, and connected to the beauty around you.
Sauna in Bugøynes
If you are stopping in Bugøynes, you’ll get a chance to go swimming in the Arctic Ocean, or just a walk along the sandy beach and take photos of the spectacular landscape. Soon after, a warm sauna will be waiting for you!

The sauna was located on the corner of the beach which was a few meters away. If you have never tried sauna before, the guide will give clear instructions on how the sauna and swimming process work, so you know how to do it in the correct way. You will fully be immersed in the Arctic sauna culture!
After all the energy bursts, you will taste traditional Norwegian Fish soup served with bread in a local restaurant where you will hear interesting facts about the village and the people. Prepare yourself for a lot of stories!

Night Sauna and Swimming in the Fjords
Imagine warming up in a cosy, wood-fired sauna, then stepping out into the crisp Arctic air for a dip in the chilly waters of a Norwegian fjord. Night swimming in the Arctic Ocean combined with a traditional sauna experience is an absolute must for any Lapland bucket list!

As you relax in the sauna or gaze up from the fjord, you might be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights filling the sky. There’s something truly surreal about watching the auroras from such a peaceful, natural setting. You’re not just seeing them; you’re experiencing them in a personal, intimate, and unforgettable.
Physical exertion level: Low-to-Moderate Intensity
If you’re planning an Arctic adventure, you might be wondering just how intense it will be. The beauty of exploring the Arctic range is that it can be easygoing but at the same time a bit energy-draining.
- Low-intensity: Most of your time will be spent sightseeing, enjoying the breathtaking landscapes, and soaking up the serene atmosphere. You’ll visit picturesque villages, spot wildlife from a comfortable distance, and enjoy the views.
- Moderate Intensity: While the activities here aren’t strenuous, you’ll be outdoors most of the day, which can be a little more challenging in the cold Arctic environment. So again, equip yourself a good health, and dress warmly to enjoy it fully!
